There are certain flavor profiles that I automatically reach for when I'm looking for a snack. If I'm in the mood for chips, the spicy flavor is usually my first draft pick. With sweet snacks, it's a little different, because there's usually a much wider range, but I do know that if I ever see a cookies & cream flavored confection, that's the one I end up taking home. Such is the case with this new Chex Mix flavor. I've never seen a C&C flavored snack outside of chocolate bars and ice cream, and wondered how this would shape up.
According to the prestigious publication, Convenience Store Decisions, this debuted in July after a positive response to the homestyle Muddy Buddies flavor and is the first salty snack mix to incorporate a cookies and cream flavor. So stop dreaming, Funyuns. As excited as I was to try this, actually eating it was just disappointing. Let me put it to you this way. I originally bought this as a small treat for Keepitcoming Love on our drive to Mohegan Sun, but had the foresight (hunger) to try it ahead of time. Miss Love is our resident cookies and cream aficionado, and this was so weak that giving it to her would have seemed like an insult.
It was awful. For a product that has the potential to incorporate a variety of textural and flavor nuances throughout a bite or two, this was upsettingly one-noted. Each piece was coated in a filmy substance, a finely ground dust in greyscale that I'm assuming is the cookies and cream condensed to a powder with the texture, but not the expertise, of a dessert at wd-50. Even on the pieces that seemed to be more grey, as though they contained more cookie, the flavor was overly sweet and lacking in any chocolate flavor. The package screams that there are "real cookies" in it, as opposed to the plastic "my first kitchen" ones I use when I make Chex Mix. I've already called witness protection and the FBI, as it appears as these have been processed through a woodchipper and slid into my plastic bag. Real cookies, my ass.
Perhaps the most aggravating element in this was the "sweet creamy coating" on the Chex. I'm not stupid. I know that any substitute or clever wording for chocolate (in this case, white chocolate) is a way to imply chocolate without having it in the ingredients. At the very least, I expected white mockolate. This didn't even rise to the level of Palmer-esque confections. The coating caused it to fail as a portable snack, as it left a cocaine-like residue all over my desk. That wasn't so bad, because at least the cocaine-esque stuff made me look like a cool, edgy person, but the flavor was downright unpalatable. As a cereal, the powder sank to the bottom and left an oily sheen on top. It was creepy stuff and made my teeth hurt.
I'm annoyed that the essence of the Chex Mix in itself is an endearingly haphazard, thrown together sort of affair and with that philosophy, neglected to include its flagship ingredient. Would it have been so hard to throw some pieces of Hydrox or co-brand with Kraft and use "real Oreo pieces" in there? I'm disappointed that a snack like this had so much potential and then dropped the ball. With a slim market for cookies and cream snacks, this isn't helping other brands branch out into similar versions.
oh that's just too bad, I'm sorry to hear that you disliked it as much as you did :( Personally, my fiance and I LOVED this flavor of Chex Mix!! We were sent up to Flagstaff, AZ for work recently, and on our way back to Phoenix we stopped at a little gas station to fill up and grab a snack. I'm the same way whenever I pick snacks, certain flavors draw me in automatically, and cookies 'n cream is definitely one of them! I've gotta tell you, We COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! I bought a bag for each of us and we literally ate each one of our entire bags in one go which is something I NEVER do, and not because I count calories or anything like that, I just get tired of the same taste after a while and have to switch it up. But I kept reaching in that bag and didn't even realize I'd eaten the whole thing until it was gone! Perhaps the worst part about it is that I've looked everywhere I can think of in Phoenix to find this flavor again, but I just can't seem to find it anywhere! I've checked gas stations, grocery stores, even Wal Mart! :( I just hope I don't have to travel all the way to Flagstaff again just to find a flavor of Chex Mix!! Oh, but I'm thinking one of these days soon this craving is going to catch up with me...
ReplyDeleteI personally find this flavor addicting as, once I picked up the bag and started eating it. I found it hard to put down. I was all ready full and I didn't want to stop.
ReplyDeleteI think they are awesome! I as well wish that i could find some more of them!
ReplyDeleteI must say that I am disapointed that I can no longer find the oreo cookies and cream chex mix. I seen them on display at a Ralphs grocery store in California and decided to try them, and I fail in love with them. I have looked all over for them at different Ralphs, target, wal mart, wal greens, CVS,Rite Aid, Vons, 99 cent store. Just can't find them anymore. I would love to see them in the store again. please bring them back.
ReplyDeleteCalifornia for Chex Mix - Oreo C&C
Your sorely mistaken!!!!! This flavor of Chex mix is DELICIOUS. The cookies and cream version of Chex mix puts muddy buddies to shame!
ReplyDeleteLike all your other commenters I think they're awesome. Just got some tonight at Krogers - they still have them...hadn't noticed them before though. The packaging now says Limited Edition, so maybe they've fixed the issues you brought up before (I see your post is a few months old)
ReplyDeleteI just found these at Kroger's a week ago. They are a "limited edition" I assumed for the holidays. I took them home and was immediately hooked!! I went into the store on my way home from work to pick up another bag and found that they were almost sold out!!! I immediately bought 5 bags just incase they do quit selling them because I AM HOOKED!!! These are delicious and I would recommend them to all! Now I just have to figure out how to make the homemade recipe!!
ReplyDeleteI thought they were FANTASTIC!!!!!! I hope they keep making them!!
ReplyDeleteWe can say u got a bad bag, maybe...I agree they were great and addicting. Also saddened they were limited.
ReplyDeleteI agree how do we make chex mix bring them back permanently??
ReplyDeleteI agree how do we make chex mix bring them back permanently??
ReplyDeleteYEAH, NUMBER ONE, I'M ANNOYED AS I AM IN FREAKIN' LOOOOOOOOVE WITH COOKIES N CREAM CHEX MIX AND I CANNOT FIND IT ANYWHERE. AND YES, IT DESERVES ALL CAPS BECAUSE I AM ANNOYED. I am sitting down at my laptop desperately seeking a recipe with oreo cookies and a box of corn chex, ready to just try SOMETHING as I can't take it anymore. AND NUMBER TWO, I am calling the company tomm. to seriously lodge my complaint about how annoyed I am that I can no longer find this flavor. Seriously!!!! ugggg. for the love of oreo yumminess bring the flavor back already!! I don't have time to experiment making it myself to tell the truth. and darn my husband for eating the rest of both of the bags I managed to find last month before they dissapeared.
ReplyDeleteI'm with everyone else. I don't know what you were eating, but everyone I gave these to LOVED them! The only bad thing is I can't find them anymore!
ReplyDeleteMy mom loves the cookies and cream chex mix. I've been everywhere looking for them and can't find them, ugh bring them back. They are the BEST
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE these and have been looking all over for them everytime Im in a convenience store. Any idea where they can be bought online???
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else here... I like to eat a lot of snacks, but this is the first one that I have found that I want to eat the whole bag at one time. This should be taken off the limited edition and made everyday. I offered coworkers a bite and they all loved it also. It is a shame that you can't find them anymore. BRING THEM BACK!
ReplyDeleteI am with everyone else here. They are the BEST!!! I found them at a Sams Club but now they no longer carry them. I sure hope it was just to see how good they will sell. We just couldn't get enough of these wonderful chex mix! They are my favorite! Hands down better than Muddy Buddies (and they used to be my fav).
ReplyDeleteMuddy Buddies are my favorite, but when the convenience store across the street from my work runs out of those (because I've bought them all usually), I go for the Cookies n' Cream, and they are very good. A little sweeter than I normally like, but that is what the flavor is meant to be so I think they did a wonderful job. To the reviewer, you should buy another bag and try them again. Not sure what happened to you. I don't know how someone who likes Oreos or Cookies n' Cream could not like these. They're stellar!
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn't like them! My husband and I got a big bag of the Cookies and Cream Chex Mix at Sam's Club this afternoon. I always make Chex Mix at Thanksgiving and Christmas and buying it just seemed kind of odd, but we had to try it. We do actually agree that it doesn't taste super cookie-ish, but we like it anyway :) Don't know if I'll buy another bag, but I'm going to try making my own using Chex, Oreos, white chocolate, and powdered sugar! Bet they'll be even better.
ReplyDeleteit tasted like someone farted in my mouth.
ReplyDeletei hated everything about it.
